世界最⼤級の規模を誇るカルデラと今も噴煙を上げる中岳を中⼼にしたその景観は神々しさを感じさせる。⽕⼭噴⽕が起こり、⼤地が揺れる、だからこそ、⾃然への畏敬の念が⽣まれ、古代から現在まで、カルデラの中の暮らしで神事が執り⾏われてきた。⾃然を畏れ、神に祈り、草原を守り、⼤地の恵みをいただく。⼈々は四季折々の阿蘇の顔を⾒ながら農の暮らしを営んでいる。

そして、その阿蘇⼭の⽕砕流が⽵⽥の地まで流れくる。

If you stand inside it, you will see the smoke emitted on the active volcano, Mt. Aso. People in the landscape have engaged in agriculture since ancient times.
Their lives have received blessings of nature to plow the rice fields, maintain meadows, and feed cattle. Sometimes they were under the threat of facinge eruptions and earthquakes. That made them regard the nature as a deity. Hope and fear of nature have been inherited as Shinto rituals, and the spirits have made their unique coexistence with the active volcano.

⽕砕流が⽣み出した波打つ⼤地は、幾筋もの川と湧⽔を蓄え、⽔を操る職⼈を育み、中世に⽵⽥という城下町を⽣み出した。屈強な城が阿蘇の⽕砕流によって⽣まれた花崗岩によって築城されたことは⾔うまでもない。そして、城下町は匠の技、⾷、芸術など伝統を重んじ、新しさを取り⼊れながら、静かなる⽵⽥の⽂化を築いていった。

The pyroclastic flow of Mt.Aso created the waving land, and granite produced by the pyroclastic flow built a substantial castle in the 16th century. The land stores many rivers and springs, and has cultivated various cultures that include the cuisine of the four seasons and bathing in the natural springs. The granite processed easily has nurtured the craftsmanship developing the castle town.
